Universe Colloquium: Experimental studies of strong interaction in exotic atoms

Wed. 08 February 2012, 16:30 — Wed. 08 February 2012, 18:00
(Excellence Cluster Universe, Seminar Room, Basement)

The Universe Cluster Colloquium presents talks by local and visiting scientists of the Excellence Cluster Universe. After the talks' ending at 17:30 the Cluster invites participants to an informal come-together with wine and cheese.

The colloquium takes place each wednesday at 16:30 at the seminar room in the Cluster building, and is organised by Cluster scientists Dr. Martin Gorbahn, Dr. Andreas Müller and Prof. Dr. Jochen Weller.

The Cluster is happy to announce Oton Vazquez-Doce (TUM). The subject of his talk: Experimental studies of strong interaction in exotic atoms

The QCD predictions in the regime of low energy transfer has been tested experimentaly studying different exotic versions of the hydrogen atom.
The pionium is the simplest system for studying the strong interaction effects, a pi+ pi- atomic state bound mainly by Coulomb force and affected by the strong interaction between the pions. Pionium has a short lifetime, predicted by chiral perturbation theory, and has been accurately measured experimentally by the DIRAC experiment at CERN.
On the strangeness sector, the kaonic hydrogen, an atom in which a kaon replaces the orbiting electron, is used for testing our knowledge of the kaon-nucleon force. The SIDDHARTA experiment has measured with high precision the shift and width due to the strong interaction in the X-ray transitions to the 1s level of different kaonic nuclei.
