DFG implements priority program on neutron experiments

Following a proposal lead by scientists of the physics department of the Technische Universität München, the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) installs a new priority program on neutron experiments. The program is titled „Precision experiments with cold and ultra-cold neutrons for astro- and particle physics“ and will have an important impact also for the research at the Excellence Cluster „Origin and Structure of the Universe“.

The extended funding of neutron experiments will help scientists to expand the known boundaries in particle physics. For example, highly precise measurements of the neutron lifetime and decay parameters will help to understand the formation of the first chemical elements in the universe. By detecting the static electric dipole moment of the neutron scientists might explain matter over antimatter excess in the universe. The newly formed research focus is part of a DFG initiative of altogether 18 programs covering the arts, life science, geology, material science, mathematics and physics. The focus programs will start in early 2010 with the funding period being altogether six years.
