Awardees for the Universe PhD Awards 2012
The Excellence Cluster Universe is happy to award two outstanding PhD theses awarded with 2.000 Euros in 2012. This year's awardees are Dr. Michael Gabler from the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics and Dr. Sebastian Neubert from the Technische Universität München. Michael Gabler is given the award in the category "Theory" for his dissertation "Coupled core-crust-magnetosphere oscillations of magnetars". This work deals with magnetic phenomena inside a compact stellar relic known as neutron stars. Gabler developed a computer code, which, for the first time, describes magneto-elastic oscillations inside the star. His thesis was supervised by PD Dr. Ewald Müller from the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics.
In the category "Experiment" the selection committee awards Sebastian Neubert. His dissertation entitled "Resonant Structures in the Multi-Pion Continuum" deals with the analysis of particles called pions. Hereby, data from the COMPASS experiment at CERN were used. Neubert's supervisor is Professor Stephan Paul from the TU München.
The ceremony will take place during the Cluster's Science Week at the Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (new seminar room in the basement). Dr. Sebastian Neubert will be awarded on 4th December 2012 at 10.00 and Dr. Michael Gabler on 5th Dezember 2012 at 11.00. Both winners are going to present a talk.
