New Postdoc for Cluster's Research Area G

The Cluster’s research area G “Heavy Elements” has a new member: in March, Dr. Stefan Typel joined the Excellence Cluster Universe as Postdoc. Typel received his PhD from the University in Münster and later worked i.a. at the the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University, East Lansing/USA and the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt. The year 2007 he spent at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) in Caen/France.

The research of Stefan Typel focuses on theoretical nuclear physics which is directly relevant to astrophysical applications. He uses direct nuclear reaction theory in the simulation of Coulomb dissociation and Trojan-Horse experiments. These reactions serve as indirect methods to extract low-energy reaction cross sections that are needed in order to predict the abundance of elements from primordial and stellar nucleosynthesis. In addition, Typel applies relativistic meanfield models to nuclear structure calculations of stable and exotic nuclei and to the equation of state of dense matter that is required in the description of neutron stars and in simulations of supernovae.

Typel will be located at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt. From there he will help to solve the research area G’s central question, how the Universe was enriched with heavy elements.
