Shaw Prize Awarded to Cluster Member Reinhard Genzel
Professor Reinhard Genzel, director of the Max Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) and member of the Excellence Cluster Universe has been awarded the Shaw Prize 2008 in Astronomy. Genzel has been honored for his outstanding contribution in demonstrating that the Milky Way has a super massive black hole at its center.
The Shaw Prize, established by the Hong Kong Chinese businessman Run Run Shaw in 2002, is an international award for scientists who have achieved distinguished and significant advances in their respective fields. The award consists of three annual prizes in Astronomy, Life Science & Medicine as well as in Mathematical Science. Each prize is endowed with US$ 1 million.
